The Met Gala Honors Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons

What a dynamic evening for fashion!  For those who believe that fashion is art and art is fashion, last night’s gala to honor Comme des Garcons’ Rei Kawakubo was fascinating.
While the white carpet was filled with fashion moments, the high fashion moments happened when Comme des Garcons was worn by those who adore high fashion and style.

The influence of Comme des Garcon was easily apparent in these ensembles:

Katy Perry                                                                               Claire Danes                                      Rami Malek

Maison Margiela                                                                           Monse                                        Dior Homme

Rei Kawakubo is the founder of Comme des Garcons and began designing clothing incorporating the label in 1973.  She decided that traditional fashion was not the route to go, instead began designing with an entirely new aesthetic challenging the notions of traditional beauty.  It can seem absurd to the general public, but her enormous creativity lifted boundaries on fashion and influenced designers as early on as Viktor and Rolf, Maison Margiela and Helmut Lang to Monse today.  She has used color palettes of white, dark grey, black and especially red.

The collection is on view at the Met from May 4 through September 4th.  Book your flight now and your tickets to the exhibit, I know that I have mine and can’t wait to savor in the incredible contribution that Rei Kawakubo has made with Comme des Garcons.
